Since 1987, WaterCan’s programs have reached more than one million people, breaking the cycle of poverty and disease and increasing opportunities for health, education, gender equality, and economic growth. WaterCan currently supports multiple projects in Africa.
Working with local partners, WaterCan supports projects that:
- are long-term development initiatives
- use low-cost, locally appropriate technologies
- integrate water supply, sanitation and hygiene education activities
- emphasize community ownership of planning and management
- emphasize self-help and community participation;
benefit and involve women
WaterCan attaches great importance to public education efforts in Canada. These activities help to ensure that providing clean water and sanitation services to the world's poor is an important priority for Canadians and other members of the international community.
WaterCan's vital work is made possible by the generous support provided by individuals, schools, faith-based organizations, community groups, corporations and foundations. WaterCan also benefits from financial support provided by the Canadian International Development Agency.

We believe that when communities have access to clean water, basic sanitation, and hygiene education, the result is a powerful ripple effect.
With access to clean water, basic sanitation, and hygiene education, the cycle of poverty and disease can be broken – making way for dramatic improvements in everything from health and education to gender equality and economic growth.
At the centre of WaterCan’s approach are collaboration and local ownership. Every community is different, and the best water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions are the ones that meet the needs of the people who live there.
In order to make a lasting impact and help as many people as possible, WaterCan encourages the communities themselves to participate at every step of the way, fostering local ownership, local skills, and local capacity to address development challenges in the future.
