The new South Africa recognizes the need to develop and equip a new generation of leaders with the necessary tools to achieve the people’s vision of a free, peaceful, and prosperous South Africa.
SAWIP would like to serve as another mechanism to help South Africans achieve their aspirations. The Initiative wants to assist and continue South Africa’s investment in its emerging generation of young leaders by offering them training and experience at the international level, and involving them with other young leaders from countries dealing with similar challenges.

We are a WIP (model for Northern Ireland and Irish youths) alumni inspired iniative that aims to develop and enhance the leadership capabilities of South African youths through leadership workshops, internships, and community service.
The South Africa Washington Ireland Program initiative has been designed to run in tandem with WIP. The program will conceivably focus on three main parts:
Part One: Selection & Orientation: Western Cape/Gauteng Province, South Africa – Students will be selected through a competitive application and interview process. As a prerequisite to participation in the full summer program, each student is challenged to get involved in a community service project in South Africa that he or she has never participated in before, and one that will stretch their learning. Before departing to Washington, DC, the South African participants will receive orientation training and advice on what to expect from and how to maximize the benefit of the Washington experience.
Part Two: Washington, DC – Participants will join the WIP class in Washington, DC from late June to the end of July during the students' mid-year holiday break. The students will be placed in professional internships and will work four days a week. They will participate in the leadership course run by WIP and engage in special topics, debates and discussions tailored to South African, Northern Irish, Irish and American issues. They will stay with local American host families in an effort to experience a unique perspective of American life.
Part Three: Western Cape/Gauteng Province, South Africa – The South African students will embark on a Re-entry project with the main aims focused on teambuilding, skills development, active citizenship, and community service. We are actively seeking partnerships with organizations that could serve as a means to integrate our students into the areas of entrepreneurship, community development, HIV/AIDS education, and youth empowerment.
