At the beginning of 1998, a group of young people in Cyprus decided to set up a new organization appealing to the youth. The organization’s objective was to be independent, democratic and modern. On 14 March 1998, Soma Akriton was established in the Kaimakli area of Nicosia with an aim at being to offer knowledge and new ideas to the youth, to reinforce the ideals of good citizenship, and to raise awareness of environmental issues.

As a flourishing organization whose activities are run by an elected council, Soma Akriton organizes youth groups in several areas in Nicosia. Currently more than 200 children and young people participate in a rich and varied annual program of events.
