OSMIJEH was founded in 1996 as a non-political, non-partisan and non-profit organisation. It is based in Gracanica town, in North-Eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina . Since 1996, OSMIJEH has carried out numerous bigger and smaller activities, from rebuilding schools and running a bursary programme, to creating community centres for youth in different villages, day care centres for children with special needs and others in need, and many training programmes for teachers, social workers, medical workers, volunteers and others.
OSMIJEH performs various activities in the area of psychosocial help to the local population, and in the sphere of education, training and practical help to the especially vulnerable groups, such as children (children with special needs, traumatised children and emotionally and otherwise affected children), the elderly and the traumatised people.
The working philosophy of OSMIJEH is self-help and empowerment through voluntary work. This is considered to be the best way of social reconstruction and recovery of the society from the war situation and post-war adversities. It wants to promote the values and practice of solidarity, the development of the civic option, education of young people for responsible citizenship, and the development of the country's own resources, the decrease of tension, and the building of trust between people.
