OKOA Society for Youth Enterprise Development
The society is interested in the following areas:
1. OKOA improved cooking stoves strategy
Funds are being sought. The society wishes to address the ill-side effects of passive smoking by rural housewives and their children at the cooking place. It is the belief of the society that positive anti-tobacco campaigns in the sub-Saharan region should address the possible health hazards on women due to passive smoking at the cooking place as a priority.
Efforts should be geared towards improving the cooking technologies to these places. These appropriate cooking technologies already exist in many parts of the world. What should be done, in our understanding is to mobilize resources for the acquisition of the technologies in the less developed regions like Kenya and sensitizing people on their presence. Efforts need to focus also on promoting their wider use among the target population.
2. OKOA green charcoal initiative
The initiative is about the possibilities of making artificial charcoal from the re-mains of household charcoal, clay and vegetable glue very good results
The charcoal has been termed "GREEN CHARCOAL" because of its many green vegetation ingredients.
A proposal is being developed to address more technical aspects of the green charcoal. These will include assessment of its efficiency as a source of household cooking fuel, its consistency, acceptability and promotion issues, costs, and bulk production.
3. OKOA Tree and flowerbeds activity
The society intends to have tree and flower bends in designated areas with the members of the community.
4. Income generation activities
One of them is baking & bricks making This activity will be widely practiced after successfully training of youths in the art by OKOA society.
A proposal is also being written to devise measures to centralize brick making and baking, activities which are highly prone to environmental damage and a potential health hazard. Brick making obtains earth/soil from digging pothole on the surface. These accumulate alot of water during the rain season and form water ponds.
5. School health, environmental and educational promotion and de-worming activities.
School health, environmental, educational promotion and de-worming The activity focuses on promoting good health among the school aged, better environmental protection and higher academic performance. It involves the use of novel teaching and learning strategies like the action based peer-to-peer method.
The de-worming activity will be integrated into the mainstream school health activity by adopting the WHO/TDR strategy.
6. Communication and networking.
