The National Youth Council (NYC) of St. Vincent and the Grenadines was formally launched in 1966.
The Editor of a magazine published at that time observed that the youth of the country had recognised that the island had embarked on a 'downward spiral' and had realised their power to effect the necessary changes.
The January 1966 edition of the Flambeau carried three articles calling for joint effort to form a young people's movement to see what the youth could do for St. Vincent. Noting that of the 87,000 persons in the country, 63,000 were under twenty (20) years old and 68,320 were not yet thirty-five (35), one writer said, "Because we are so young, any important decision about St. Vincent will affect us more, and for a longer period than any other sector in the community".
