The National Youth Council of Bulgaria was established in November 1997 and is still in the process of formation. The idea of setting it up arose in 1991 when the former Dimitrov Young Communist League (the youth NGO of the former Bulgarian Communist Party) collapsed. But in the period 1991- 1997 the political situation in Bulgaria often changed and the unification of Bulgaria's youth was not possible. Now the situation is looking more favourable.
The National Youth Council of Bulgaria consists of about 36 NGOs with a national structure. Some are youth organisations of political parties, some are cultural organisations and only a few are student organisations. The chairman of NYC is Viktoria Vasileva from the Youth Clubs of the Union of Democratic Forces.
