To see an economically empowered citizenry of Lorengelup by availing them the opportunity to engage in self-sustaining Income Generating Activities and Community Development Projects.
Lorengelup, located 47 kilometres on the eastern part of Lodwar Town in Turkana County is a village with a population of approximately two thousand (2000) people with an illiteracy level of more than 80%. With the lowest rainfall in the Republic of Kenya and Africa, life in this part of the world is characterized by substandard living, lack of security, unreliable food and inadequate clean water sources, and generally an overall daily fight for survival. Like many other regions of rural Kenya, the local community has to depend on the philanthropy and charity of friends of goodwill and rely on help from Non-Governmental Organizations in the form of relief food which may not always be forthcoming. They have been passing their days in extreme inhuman conditions with a few engaging in business but with the challenge of initial starting capital. There has been a high level of poverty among the local populace cemented by low level of literacy, poor health, malnutrition, wanting educational facilities and depressing environmental and sanitation conditions. Government interventions have always remained traditional yet the conditions of this region demand innovative approaches.
Lorengelup Primary School was started in the year 1985 by the Government of Kenya with an intention of eradicating the high levels of illiteracy in the local community. The current pupil’s population is 150 in single streams with only Three Teachers Service Commission/ Government teachers and four teachers employed by Parents Teachers Association. The school’s infrastructure includes a staffroom, three mud-walled classrooms and teachers’ quarters all of which are thatched. These mud-walled classes were established tens of years back and have served as the sole source of learning structure available to the whole primary school that is complete with KCPE examination candidates. At times, the school administration is forced to have pupils of different classes occupy this so called classroom with one class facing the other end of the wall and the other facing the other. This has paralyzed teaching in this primary school as teachers have to wait for one to get out since it is practically impossible to have them teach different classes in the same structure at the same time. This becomes even worse during rainy seasons when the mud is brought down rendering the classes no longer conducive for teaching and learning. In order to address the above problem, more classes are needed to ensure that no learners are turned away; thus ensuring provision of universal education to all needy learners in this part of Kenya.
Since the introduction of Free Primary Education in 2003 by the Kibaki administration, there has been an increased enrolment in primary schools, without a commensurate increase in either infrastructure or personnel. This has led to overstretched education and sanitary facilities, adversely affecting the quality of education. We recognize that one of the ways of improving the retention and performance in primary schools is through improving the infrastructure. Lorengelup Community Development Initiative wishes to initiate Lorengelup Primary School Classrooms Projects to be supported by friends, Government and Non-Governmental Organizations, as has been done in other parts of Kenya in order to help meet the basic education needs of the school-going children of the poor men and women in Loreng'elup through a decent learning environment. We strongly believe that promoting and enhancing education in Lorengelup is the only sustainable way of sorting out the numerous issues that have bedeviled this village for so long.

1. HIV-AIDS PREVENTION PROGRAMMES
Lorengelup community development initiative shall engage in activities aimed at creating HIV/AIDS awareness in the community as well as partnering/ supporting any like-minded organization that intends to educate the community on HIV/AIDS prevention and effects.
2. BEE-KEEPING
The larger Lorengelup region is an area with a potential of beekeeping which is not only economically sustainable but also environment-friendly. A number of organizations tried educating the local community on beekeeping although no concrete outcome has so far been realized. We wish to pick from there, get the people trained on beekeeping and be given beehives to begin beekeeping and the honey will be sold to the national market through the local livestock office. In this community members will benefit a lot and members shall be self-employed.
3. FOOTBALL AND VOLLEYBALL HOLIDAY TOURNAMENTS
The youth of Kerio division came up with an initiative of engaging themselves in football and volleyball tournaments over the April, August and December school holidays. As a practice, each team of the over ten teams is often asked to report to the tournament with Ksh. 5000 which has become a great challenge. The boys have the passion for playing and when therefore they cannot manage to raise the Ksh. 5000 per team, they resort to strategize on how to continue with the football and volleyball tournaments while living within the restrictions of the limited finances. Since the tournament is usually scheduled to last for four days, managing with little or no food throughout the tournament has proved to be a great challenge among the youth. Lorengelup Community Development Initiative would like to financially support the youth in these tournaments and use football as a tool for social change. In liaison with the Youth Ministry local office and national office, we wish to use the tournaments as community entry point, developing the talent of the youth participants while creating positive behaviour change.
4. MICRO-FINANCE
Income levels in Lorengelup are below the United Nations $1/day definition of extreme poverty and to meet this challenge the Community Based Organization and the church shall unite and pledge to fight against the incessant poverty. The work must start but financial resources are required to meet the great need. Locodein aims to move an informed, context specific and action-oriented approach in sorting out the problem of poverty. This project should be considered as a stepping stone towards a longer term initiative to effectively bridge the gap that still exists between the village of Lorengelup and other well-developed regions of Kenya that have reaped the economic boom that has transformed them.
5. SUPPORTING THE LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL
Specific Infrastructure Issues:
• Dilapidated and unsafe buildings and structures
• Congestion of classroom facilities
• Lack of new admissions for learner’s owing to lack of classroom space
• High teacher- learner ratios which affects quality of learning
• Strain on the current facilities because of the large numbers e.g. the ablutions facilities etc.
• Inadequate provision of desks which affects learner comfort and thus attentiveness in class.
• Lack of library facilities and learning materials
• Lack of computers and modern teaching facilities.
• Teacher- learner ratios: teachers are overstretched by the large numbers in each classroom which implies that the classes cannot accommodate more learners despite the high demand for classes by new learners.
• Need for additional classes: In order to address the above problem, more classes are needed to ensure that no learners are turned away; thus ensuring provision of universal education to all needy learners.
• Lack of proper playground facilities: Sports and games are important in improving cognitive and manipulative skills in learners as well as providing a source of recreation and improving learners’ health.
LOCODEIN will work to help improve the image of the classrooms at Lorengelup Primary School and other neighbouring schools to make them conducive for learning and be permanent structures.
6. ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
We seek to support the young men and women in Lorengelup with the necessary skills to venture into the business of working for the betterment of their own livelihoods. Agriculture along River Turkwell and water harvesting for development purposes among others shall be supported.
7. ADULT LITERACY
We intend to initiate adult literacy programs to enhance the literacy capacity of the locals whose illiteracy level is over eighty percent.
