The mission of the International Youth Leadership Institute is to nurture a new generation of visionary leaders from the African Diaspora who, inspired by their rich African heritage, are committed to leave a legacy in the world. Students’ development - academic, leadership and personal - is central to IYLI’s mission. Volunteers and staff facilitate training and seminars, conduct overseas study programs, and mentor and counsel students, including preparation for higher education. Staff and volunteers are young people who challenge students to expand and practice their analytical and problem solving skills in all IYLI programs. Through its framework of history, culture, geography and environment, IYLI helps to prepare leaders who are able to think critically and to apply a global perspective to local community issues and problems. Students learn and use the framework in theme-based seminars focusing on critical local and global issues, in conducting research in Africa, and in developing public service projects to benefit the community.

Programs vary by age group, but all focus on academic, leadership and personal development. IYLI Fellows are enrolled in grades 9-12 and are drawn from all five boroughs. Fellows participate in seminars and leadership training, service learning in the community and national and international study in Africa and Latin America.
Middle school students participate in training and project-based learning that is geared toward their developmental level. For example, they learn about community and other issues through Internet research, speakers and films. Through hands-on projects, they use still and video photography to document aspects of their own and other communities.
