We are spearheading a youth initiated ‘Care, Not Coercion’ campaign to bring attention to some of the more problematic elements of these facilities such as abusive treatment, treatment whose efficacy has not been proven, as well as violation of rights of youth.
We seek to achieve this, in part, by offering a space where individuals effected by such facilities can come together cohesively to affirm their grievances pertaining to these issues.
We are calling on Congress to hold hearings on this important issue to hear our stories, and ensure the reality on the ground is consistent with rhetoric on efficacy and care for youth from the industry, as well as to ensure the treatment of youth is grounded in the protection of their basic rights.
We have begun to engage in grassroots advocacy, grassroots organizing, and alliance-building.
