YOUCAN is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to building a culture of peace among youth. We are Canada's leading organization run for-youth-by-youth. Our vision is to foster "a nation where all youth work in partnership with their communities to grow in peaceful and conflict resolving lifestyles."
Our core objectives are:
* To promote the peaceful resolution of personal, community and societal conflicts.
* To promote the concept of non-violence, peacebuilding and conflict resolution.
* To establish a Canadian and International network of youth peacebuilders.
* To highlight and affirm the work of peacebuilders of all ages, especially that of young Canadians.
Crime prevention, conflict resolution and violence prevention programs have been in Canada for many years. One of the largest gaps identified in the ongoing research has been the networking of programs, ideas, stories and resources in the area of conflict resolution for-youth-by-youth. YOUCAN was founded due to a need for a youth led organization that focused on developing solutions for youth issues. It strives to promote a message of non-violence in our communities and our schools. YOUCAN is committed to focusing on peaceful conflict resolution, the prevention of violence and consensus building through youth led initiatives.
YOUCAN assists youth in exploring the connection between conflict resolution and violence prevention. This, combined with training workshops, forums and national conferences provide youth with the skills and knowledge to make a real difference in our communities by developing "Youth Taking Action" plans. These plans allow for youth empowerment by challenging youth to identify the most current issues they face in their schools and create solutions to address them.
These skills are applicable to all facets of life and will last a lifetime. In the past nine years, YOUCAN has trained over 18,000 youth nation-wide in the skills of facilitation and non-violent conflict resolution. YOUCAN stays in touch with youth who represent every province and territory in Canada as well as members in Colombia, Slovakia, Mexico, and Jamaica.
Our mission is to develop and promote nationwide youth-led initiatives. Our goal is to facilitate the training and development of such initiatives across Canada in order to prepare today's youth for the challenges of tomorrow. We hope to achieve this mission, in cooperation with Canada's youth by giving them ownership of the process. Not only does this empower youth within their communities, but it will also ensure a future of peace created for youth-by-youth.
