The National Committee was founded in 1969 under the name Internationale Jongeren Uitwisseling (IJU). In 1993 merged with Vrijwillige Internationale Aktie (VIA - a member of Service Civil International-SCI). VIA is active only in the Flemish part of Belgium, has an office in Antwerp and operates both long and short-term youth exchanges.

Opportunities for Youth
The programme is aimed at people aged 18 to 30. Placements include working with the disabled, children, youths, the elderly, at fair-trade shops, cultural centres, at eco-farms, and vocational training centres.
