The Umpalazi: Community and Wildlife Project is a project of the Animal Protection and Environmental Sanctuary (APES) Set on a breathtaking 7000 acre property, in the South African bush, Umpalazi is a farmhouse bursting with potential; both as a home and as a refuge for wildlife.
Umpalazi borders a future Big 5 Game Reserve that will one day compare with Kruger National Park, without being over-commercialized. It is situated 17 km from an old established town, called Greytown, yet is secluded amongst the magic of nature.
This is a joint project with the Animal Protection and Environmental Sanctuary (A.P.E.S.) as co-founders, Dawn Magowan and Rodney Pendleton, will be utilising the Umpalazi Reserve as a release site for their sanctuary's wildlife.
Volunteers will have a unique opportunity to work closely with South African wildlife, primarily the South African Vervet Monkey. They will have a direct and positive impact on the conservation of wildlife and the environment through the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife, snare/trap clearing; game counts, and environmental management.
There are also opportunities to live with a Zulu family (for a day etc.), and visit other attractions in KwaZulu-Natal (i.e. CROW, Game Reserves, St.Lucia Wetlands etc.)
The Umpalazi: Community & Wildlife Project relies on volunteer fees to survive, thus without them, there would be no project. Therefore if you volunteer at Umpalazi, you are directly conserving South Africa's wildlife (particulary vervet monkeys) and environment.
Numerous orphaned and injured vervet monkeys are rehabililtated at APES (project partner) and, thus Umpalazi, and as a volunteer you will provide the resources and help to give these beings a chance at a better life.
The local Zulu community also benefit greatly via employment, environmental education and aid work.
This opportunity costs £610 per month (includes food, accommodation and laundry) and the only requirement is that volunteers have a love of animals and the environment.
