The Award offers young people worldwide the opportunity to discover their talents, push themselves to the limit, and shape the world around them. It was founded in the UK in 1956 as The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, and now has a presence in 125 countries. Participants set their own goals and measure their own progress, but their achivements are externally recognised. Gold Award participants receive a certificate from the patron of their national Award Programme, in many cases the head of state.
