The 2009 Dare to Dream Project will work with youth from New York City high schools through an innovative partnership with the Franklin H. Williams Caribbean Cultural Center/African Diaspora Institute. Under the direction of a youth media educator, participants will explore the lives and roles of immigrants in their communities, addressing issues in the contemporary immigration debate and exploring cross-cultural connections. Students will then express their viewpoints and findings through media arts projects, ranging from slideshows to short documentaries. Creating a tool for multicultural communication is a primary objective for the program, and throughout the creative and learning process, youth will use blogs to share their experiences and video work to begin this process. The program’s curriculum will be provided by the award-winning Educational Video Center, a youth media program that has been providing professional development and youth media training since 1984.

The Dare to Dream Project is a dynamic annual media arts initiative for New York City youth. Providing young adults with hands-on professional and artistic training, the Dare to Dream Project is a program that culminates in a special screening of films and multimedia projects produced by young people. A six-month intensive curriculum vigorously improves youth’s media literacy skills and engages them in civics, learning about issues that affects them as artists and community members. Participants are encouraged to visit cultural centers and learn from their community-based organizations while developing their projects, which are organized around a contemporary issue each year.
