Youth and students are disproportionately affected by the growing HIV and AIDS pandemic ( making up half of all new HIV infections) and it is our generation’s future that will be most devastated by the disease’s impact if decisive action isn’t taken now. It is clear that we are in a position of responsibility to ourselves, to our peers, and to the generations to follow to bring the epidemic to an end.
As individuals and students, we often feel powerless and insignificant. When we organize and act collectively, however, we build a tremendous force for change. Remember that it is not because world leaders are ignorant of the HIV and AIDS crisis that they have not done more ; it is because they have not been pressured to act by enough people.
Young people represent a population base that has been largely untapped in terms of advocacy despite the incredible success of students and youth in organizing for change throughout world history. By organizing students and youth, we build a force of young, intelligent, visionary, and passionate individuals that transforms into a movement capable of anything it aims for. Because politicians often forget to take students and youth into account when planning and strategizing, we are able to use a ‘surprise factor’ to catch them off guard and get our voices heard.
Students and youth have the responsibility, organization, and power necessary to end HIV and AIDS. No one else is going to do it. No other generation is impacted by HIV and AIDS in the same way that ours is. It is up to us to propel the student and youth movement forward to influence the President, Parliament , corporations, and others in power to cause real change in policy to contribute to the ending of HIV and AIDS worldwide.
