VITA – Slovenian Head Injury Association was established in 1992 as a non-governmental and voluntary organisation of children, adolescent and young adults who sustained injuries in an accident (mostly traffic accidents), then of their families, volunteers and professionals (in the year 2000 association had 360 members). Because of the injuries they sustained the permanent consequences on physical and psychosocial level (dysfunction of: motion, speech and communication capabilities, learning, cognitive and emotional-behavioural capabilities). All mentioned difficulties represent obstacles in their participation in regular school system and in a work process. Consequently they stay closed in narrow family circle, mostly left in care of their parents and inactive spending of their free time. The main goal of the association is to enable the proteges in equal, active and purposeful participation in activities of wider social environment, social and working reintegration with the purpose of prevention from secondary psychical problems and perseverance of already adopted physical condition. VITA association besides connecting, informing, setting up the presence of media and collecting the funds for its functioning also organises many other events such as: meetings, workshops, excursions, charity concerts, skiing and snow games, recreational-sports days, picnics, dances, climbing, hipotherapy, recreational swimming, camping and holidays on seaside and individual accompaniment. From the establishing of the association volunteers are involved in its activities. The role of volunteers is in our organisation crucial, because they represent peers to our proteges. Through that kind of relationships proteges can develop healthy mutual relations and social contacts and actively involve in social activities. Association also connect the family members of head injured persons and organises meetings for them in purpose of exchanging experiences and opinions and to include them in activities in association.
