In 1967, the “Japanese Youth Goodwill Cruise Program” started as one of the projects to commemorate the Centennial of the Meiji Restoration. Both the “Japanese Youth Goodwill Mission Program” and the “Japanese Youth Goodwill Cruise Program” gave a big dream and hope to the youth of Japan since the government would take the initiative to send the youth overseas at the time when it was still very difficult for them to go aboard on their own.

What does the organization do?
The Ship for World Youth (SWY) is a unique international cultural exchange program organised by the Government of Japan. The most prestigious program of its kind, SWY brings together over 250 youth from around the world to engage in activities supporting international cooperation and understanding..

From mid-January to early March 2008, 120 Japanese and 144 international youth from 12 other nations will live together on the Japanese flagship, the Nippon Maru, as it travels from Japan to Tonga, and New Zealand. Delegates will attend seminars and lectures given by world-class professors and will discuss new avenues to overcome challenges facing humanity today. Please note that English is the working language on the Ship and that all program costs (travel, etc.) are covered by the Government of Japan.
