Sanlaap, is the eastern India affliate of ECPAT International. There are an estimated 1 million women and girls in prostitution in India, who are victimised into brothel-based prostitution. An estimated 40 per cent of them are under the age of 18.Sanlaap is a human rights organisation that works to combat trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation in women and children in India, and also rehabilitate girl-children and minors rescued from prostitution.
In the 9 years between 1993 and 2002,there has been a 66.7% increase in the number of the red light areas of Kolkata, and estimated number of victims of trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation concurrently. Demographic estimates in the red light areas of Mumbai,
Delhi and elsewhere suggest a significant increase in the percentage of Bengali speaking women and children.Sanlaap seeks to uphold the voices of the marginalised sections of society who are most affected by,and victimised into, commercial sexual exploitation as a gendered phenomenon, that targets women and girls only.
The guiding principles of its programmes are protection of children and women vulnerable to trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation, and protecting the human rights of victims of trafficking.
Sanlaap has a very active youth group. Its has build up an communique with regular school children, children in prostituion, children rescued from prostitution and children living in red light areas.
