Who We Are
We are a group of ambitious, dedicated, energetic, and concerned youth whose are interests range from social issues, international development, helping the vulnerable and needy, and working with the local Red Cross branch. There is no age limit to who can join. One can either participate as a Youth Member or as an Adult Advisor. This year, we have brainstormed ideas and decided to divide ourselves into four committees; each of us dealing with a particular focus: Speakers Committee, T-Shirt Committee, UTM Committee, and Fundraising Committee.
Our Objectives
•Increase awareness about humanitarian issues.
•Educate the youth about the many issues that people face worldwide on a daily basis.
•Fundraise for specific causes.
•Encourage the participation of young peoples and present them with opportunities for leadership and involvement.
•Develop liaisons with the community and with other youth groups.
•Improve the live and dignity of victims of armed conflict and internal violence in any way we can.
Our Foundation
Before August 2007, the Peel Region lacked a Canadian Red Cross (CRC) Youth Group as has been existent in other cities or regions, such as Toronto and North York. As early as January 2007, several youth had approached Svetlana Ageeva, the International & Youth Program Coordinator for the GTA CRC, and expressed an interest in forming a Youth Council in the Region of Peel. After a few email sending, the first meeting convened on August 30, 2008, attracting a handful of students. After word of mouth spread the news about the Council, the turnouts for the monthly meetings began to increase. Now, there are students and young adults in the Council who come from more than 10 different high schools and 3 different colleges/ universities.
Our Connection to the Canadian Red Cross
We are a group that exists within the Canadian Red Cross. The members that attend the Red Cross Orientation and complete the required paper work become official volunteers for the Canadian Red Cross. In that capacity, we become equipped to volunteer our time and effort by participating in YAC or by serving in any of the Canadian Red Cross' multitude of programs. We have a liaison with the CRC through our status as an affiliate of the CRC; and, as such, the CRC backs and supports us in our endeavours.
Our Values
In common with the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies around the world, we adhere to and advocate the 7 principles of the Red Cross. Whenever we assume our roles as volunteers for the CRC, our affiliation with the Red Cross movement obliges us to abide by these 7 principles, which are:
•Humanity
•Impartiality
•Neutrality
•Independence
•Voluntary Service
•Unity
•Universality
The Adult Advisors
Adult Advisors are persons who sit in the Council. They have usually had relevant or professional experience/ expertise that they are willing to share with the Youth Members. They offer support, motivation and guidance to the youth members.
