The main reason for this project is that, while the knowledge of HIV and AIDS is considered universal in Zimbabwe; this knowledge has not been significantly translated to practice. Research has shown that a large proportion of young people are still involved in risky sexual behaviour their main concern being not to get pregnant rather than being infected with HIV. As of 2007, Zimbabwe had a population of about 11 million people, of which 25% was estimated to be living with HIV and AIDS. The question that keeps coming up is, ‘why in a country where knowledge levels were so high, were the new infections high as well? What are the health and youth workers missing? How can they design their programmers in order to have more impact on behaviour change among young people? Adolescence is often a time of experimentation and it is important to identify ‘protective factors’ that help adolescents reduce high risk behaviours.
