Nairobi Disabled Empowerment Programme (NADEP) is a Community Based Organization formed by and run by people with disabilities. NADEP was founded in 2006 and later registered under the Ministry of Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services.
The formation of NADEP was part of the efforts to bridge the existing gap between the mainstream disability organizations and issues related to persons with disabilities as there was no effort being made towards their holistic empowerment.
This prompted youth with different disabilities coming together to found NADEP by the virtue of experiencing the same problems thus being in a unique position to identify desirable and effective courses of action to counter the effects of disability.
It was realized that; poverty bedeviling youth with disabilities can be lessened and self-sustainability achieved within a relatively short period if disabled themselves are given opportunities to determine courses of action. This strategy would ensure that the experiences, needs, concerns and aspirations of youth with disabilities are met. .
The core component of the organization is the activation of persons with disabilities in the society to think creatively and independently to realize and participate in the integrated sustainable activities and efforts aimed at self renewal, improving their living standards and encourage all youth with disabilities to know their civil and human rights and to participate in all matters concerning or affecting them at all levels.
NADEP works with various forms of people with disability, among them being
1. the physically challenged
2. the blind and low Vision
3. the Hearing impaired (Deaf)
4. intellectually impaired for referral services
