MATA is a community of anti-trafficking advocates in the Philippines. The Movement of Anti-Trafficking Advocates (MATA) is geared towards motivating and engaging the youth to become voices for the voiceless victims of human trafficking in the Philippines
To prevent trafficking both at the supply and demand side, the Visayan Forum Foundation, together with the Multi-Sectoral Network Against Trafficking (MSNAT), organized the “War Against Human Trafficking” (WAHT) Campaign in 2009. This campaign served as a rallying point for a series of activities that mobilized various stakeholders to scale up and sustain anti-human trafficking efforts in the country at every point of the process—the source communities, transit areas and popular destinations.
One of the significant results of the campaign was the formation of the Movement of Anti-Trafficking Advocates (MATA), an anti-human trafficking advocacy network aimed at motivating and engaging the youth to become the voices for the voiceless victims of human trafficking in the Philippines. MATA (“eye” in Filipino) serves as the “watchful eyes”—vigilant youth committed to providing appropriate mechanisms that address human trafficking in the country.
The MATA is composed of student leaders, youth groups and volunteer organizations committed to raise awareness and promote human rights advocacy among the youth. It has various chapters in major schools, cities and provinces nationwide.
In October 2011, the Visayan Forum Foundation, in coordination with the Inter-Agency Council against Trafficking (IACAT), in partnership with MTV EXIT, and with support from the USAID and AusAID held a week-long National Youth Summit of MATA.
Attended by some 110 youth representatives from all over the Philippines, the Summit became a venue for the youth to showcase their creative ideas. It also served as a forum involving government, business leaders and media professionals to collaborate with youth leaders in anti-trafficking initiatives. They also learned from various experts on the issue of human trafficking and increased their capacity to conduct awareness-raising campaigns. Through skills training from industry professionals on campaign planning, filmmaking, songwriting, journalism, theater arts, and design and graphics, MATA was able to generate their own campaign material with specific anti-trafficking key messages relevant and targeted to the youth in their respective communities.

The Movement of Anti-Trafficking Advocates (MATA) is geared towards motivating and engaging the youth to become voices for the voiceless victims of human trafficking in the Philippines. It was organized by the Visayan Forum Foundation in 2009 as part of the War Against Human Trafficking (WAHT) campaign.
Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, a clandestine pandemic affecting every member of our society. It occurs on all levels of society, transcending race, gender, and socioeconomic status.
In line with the WAHT campaign, MATA serves as a means to manifest "Phase I: Sound the Alarm" and "Phase II: Gather the Troops" by raising awareness on the issue, and promoting human rights and advocacy among the youth.
