The Métis National Council believes in fostering a nation full of possibility and opportunity. In keeping with this philosophy, the MNC has established numerous initiatives for youth to ensure that our nation continues to grow and strengthen into the new millennium.
These goals & objectives were set by the MNYAC for the 2004-05 fiscal year. We will report back to you on our progress. If you have recommendations on how the MNYAC can better meet your needs, please send us your feedback and will use it in planning for 2005-06 and beyond.
OVER-ARCHING
Goal: Engage in positive, Métis-specific initiatives and policies affecting Métis youth.
Goal: Engage in positive, Métis-specific initiatives and policies affecting Métis youth.
Objective: Each Area of Accountability holder will participate in at least two committees or initiatives of that sector.
Goal: Ensure Métis youth are aware of opportunities and issues in each sector.
Objective: Each Area of Accountability will have at least one article submitted per Gazette issue, and update corresponding information on metisyouth.com at least once per quarter.
Objective: Métis National Youth Role Models will be promoted throughout the Area of Accountability that corresponds with their award category.
Role Model Program
Goal: Promote greater awareness of the program.
Objective: Measure awareness of program by number of nominations received. Solicit to receive 50 role model nominations for 2005.
Communications
Goal: Create awareness of Métis youth issues and resources with informative tools for Métis youth and stakeholders (educators, health services; Métis community).
Goal: Ensure Gazette and metisyouth.com are developed & updated.
Objective: Expand the audience of the MNYAC communication tools.
Objective: Create MNYAC communications plan that incorporates key messages for MNYAC projects, increasing submissions from the community, a mail-out strategy, advertising campaign, etc and includes timelines.
Health
Goal: Promote healthy living.
Goal: Create awareness of the importance of maintaining high volumes of careers in the medical/health field.
Objective: To promote awareness on health issues by creating tools in plain language for Métis youth.
Objective: Develop a database of free clinics and other low-cost resources across the Homeland.
Objective: Have various areas of the Health Sector actively participate in our Health conference
Culture & Heritage
Goal: Promote opportunities for Métis youth to participate in activities that celebrate Métis culture & heritage.
Goal: Promote national Métis Role Models in culture & heritage category.
Objective: Develop and maintain database of role models.
Objective: Create a calendar of Métis Events to be updated on metisyouth.com.
Environment
Goal: Create awareness of recognized hunting rights and the effect on endangered species.
Goal: Promote renewable resources.
Objective: Educate on the department of NWMO (nuclear waste management org).
Objective: Educate on the department of SARA (species at risk).
Objective: Develop database of youth environment non-governmental organizations.
Economic Development
Goal: Recognize Métis youth entrepreneurs.
Objective: Develop database of Métis youth entrepreneurs and business resources (funding, mentors, associations).
Goal: Promote opportunities to Métis youth to participate in economic and community development.
Objective: Organize information on processes, tools, and resources for economic-community development.
Justice & Rights
Goal: Promote education awareness rights.
Objective: Develop resources pertaining to Métis rights, especially with post-Powley harvesting rights.
Life Long Learning
Goal: Enable Métis youth to participate in culturally appropriate life long learning.
Goal: Ensure a Métis youth perspective on educational needs.
Objective: Participate in federal roundtables for K-12 and Adult Learning.
Objective: Develop a resource & guide manual for teachers to teach Métis children and youth.
Objective: Compile educational resources, such as: Métis institutions and programs; financial resources; other educational tools to aid learning and other personal factors.
Métis Affairs (F-P-T-A, National Métis Youth Agenda, Achieving Results)
Goal: Ensure Métis Youth initiatives evolving from the F-P-T-A process are benefiting the specific needs of Métis Youth.
Objective: Redesign the Cultural-Economic-Political-Social (CEPS) leadership development model to be Métis-specific.
Goal: Develop a 5 year (2005-2009) National Métis Youth Agenda that is reflective of Métis youth across the Homeland, and aligned with the MNC’s agenda.
Objective: Hold Community Consultations with at least four Métis youth sites in each province, and with each governing member, to obtain direction on next 5 year agenda.
Goal: Ensure Métis Youth’s needs are considered when collaborating with federal government on planning, measuring and reporting on results achieved with federal programming.
Objective: Participate in the federal roundtable on Achieving Results.
Housing
Goal: Empower Métis people to improve the living conditions of their homes though awareness of positive options and rights.
Objective: Develop a database of Métis housing associations and other low income housing.
Objective: Promote awareness of the health concerns resulting from poor living conditions.
Objective: Ensure Métis youth are aware of resources to find out their tenant rights.
Sports & Recreation
Goal: Promote healthy living through active lifestyles.
Goal: Promote pride in Métis heritage through revitalizing our traditional games and activities.
Goal: Create awareness of sporting events, and encourage Métis participation.
Objective: Develop a database of low income sporting resources.
Objective: Initiate and promote Métis sporting teams, and act as liaison with indigenous sporting associations such as North American Indigenous Games and the Aboriginal Sports Circle.
