MAKWA (Making Aboriginal Kids Walk Away from tobacco abuse) is a Youth Action Alliance (YAA) group based out of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. It is a youth led program made up of 7-10 Peer Leaders who develop activities and events based on our focus of living a healthy lifestyle free of tobacco industry products while educating and inspiring peers and their communities to do the same. Peer Leaders advocate for policy changes within schools and the community regarding the use of tobacco industry products (ie. Tobacco Free Sports, Through with Chew, Tobacco Display Ban, Flavour Gone, Parks and Beaches Free of Tobacco Industry Products). With these efforts, YAA groups hope to change social norms that support commercial tobacco use and counter tobacco industry marketing practices.

MAKWA Making Aboriginal Kids Walk Away (from tobacco abuse), is a group of peer leaders with the Youth Action Alliance, at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. MAKWA is available to coordinate workshops and events to educate youth on the abuse of tobacco, but also to restore the pride and culture in the traditional role of tobacco and Aboriginal people. We are already actively involved in several community initiatives, and have established several partnerships with existing community resources. Together we take a positive approach in restoring culture and education in hopes of decreasing the mortality rates of Aboriginal people and cancer, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. MAKWA Peer Leaders use a holistic approach, incorporating fun and innovative techniques when delivering their education sessions
