The programme is aimed at 16 to 30 year olds. Most of the exchangees will be living in the countryside, about one half with host families, the other half at their work placements or schools.
Voluntary work placements are mostly at social work projects - at foster homes for disabled or socially disadvantaged children, kindergartens, schools, youth centres, homes for the physically or mentally disabled. There is the possibility to attend an "Opisto", i.e. a Folk High School. Courses offered vary from school to school. Exchangees placed there are expected to do some extracurricular voluntary work. Younger exchangees, especially those who have not finished school yet, will attend a higher secondary school.
