Current initiatives

a) Empowering slum dwellers with micro entrepreneurial skills with a view to establishing an Income Generating Activities (IGAs) thereby, making them becomes self-reliant.
b) Community savings program where each member save at least Kshs 50 weekly to help build up loans or vocational training points.
c) Market for Search Small Scale Business Enterprises in partnership with the Jua-Kali Federation Associations of Kenya.
d) Food Security: - Currently, we provide food to a section of the slum dwellers living within Mugumo Ini division in Kbera Slums. Correctly and to be precise, KCEP caters for 150 children financial constraints notwithstanding.
e) In partnership with the Jua Kali federation of Kenya, participating in East Africa and nation wide exhibitions.
f) Promoting family values including gender empowerment through partnership with the Nairobi Believers Mission-NBM. Friends of the NBM , have fully financed our current projects.
g) Teaching and promoting a good work ethics in Kibera through partnership with the NBM.
h) Raising awareness on environmental concerns. So far, in partnership with stakeholders, KCEP has been involved in clean up Kibera, tree-planting initiatives to mention but a few.
i) HIV/ Aids awareness, home-care and integrated health support services.

Achievements
Ø Seven functional and operating micro businesses mainly run and managed specifically by women.
Ø KCEP has sponsored Information Communication and Technology (ICT) courses cum training with the region. This has been achieved through the ably partnership nurtured by the Kenyan College of Communications Technology (KCCT).
Ø Trained the community groups on micro-enterprise including marketing and basic financial management units courses e.g. book keeping.
Ø A day care program is designed to free young mothers and /or single parents hence enabling them take part in the micro enterprise development and training opportunities offered by KCEP staff/friends.

Enterprise Development

KCEP is the community development ministry arm of the Nairobi Believers Mission, a Christian church organization also based in Kibera.
The church identified the community’s members’ needs and came up with a non-partisan project approach, working in the Kibera community and by encouraging active participation among slum dwellers with a goal to help eradicate poverty in the area as part of fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).

Part of our policy is to save our weekly church offering collections until it reaches a target of Ksh 5000 and loan one member to start up a business.

Case Studies:

Pamela Achieng
Our fist business was started in 2006 to a young woman from destitute family who had two kids and a then alcoholic husband.

With the small income, Pamela transformed her home and now has fully paid back her loan, her husband got off alcohol and they’ve since then moved out of Kibera and continue with business. Both of her kids are now in school. The church was therefore convinced that micro business is a powerful tool in transforming willing families within the slums. Pamela is still involved with selling of African curios and is now helping us train upcoming businesses through apprenticeship.

Since then we’ve been enabled to empower seven more families with small businesses.

Proposal
It is therefore our desire to empower twenty (20) more business within 2008. The business proposals our office has received so far are all different and unique ranging from fishmongers, vegetable and grocery shops, saloon & barbershops, curios, liquid soap manufacture and other micro-enterprises. Each asking for a start up loan ranging from Ksh. 2500 – 7,000.

A request of Kshs 558,000 is requested to establish this project.

Through our business-mentoring program, KCEP has already identified and trained over 20 members of our community in micro enterprise development. These are also available for employment.

The 20 have also formed groups of five and are now saving at least Ksh. 50 or more weekly to act as collateral, in order to guarantee each others loan repayments.

Depending on the success, our Micro Enterprise project will expand & engage more community members in Income generating activities in 2009.

Do Nothing Option
Dong nothing will mean that Kibera remains in the existing cycle of extreme; poverty, ignorance, with escalated health issues & in dire vulnerability to all kinds of exploitation.
