Information Communications Technology (ICT) and grand media campaigns cannot magically liberate people, alleviate poverty, erase the population divide, and ensure prosperity. In planning for and using ICT and media "interventions", many initiatives often concentrate on ICT and the media product itself, rather than what they want to accomplish through it.
Info-Share was created with the belief that ICT and innovative media can help bridge communications gaps between the main stakeholders in the peace process and enable public participation in the process. Sources of information and communication on the ethno-political conflict and conflict transformation processes are extremely limited in Sri Lanka. This acute lack of information is exacerbated by serious problems of knowledge sharing in the peace process. Multiple initiatives and agendas, often overlapping each other and dovetailing into existing initiatives, operate within the broad framework of conflict transformation with little or no cohesion or holistic outlook.
Info-Share aims to address this knowledge sharing lacunae by providing a platform, readily adoptable by all stakeholders in the peace process, to engender a culture of open information sharing, where the approach to conflict transformation in one that is holistic, inclusive and participatory. By supporting the creation of "shared spaces" in the public and private media the group hopes to help cross the ethnic and political divides in Sri Lanka.
Info-Share has already engendered keen interest amongst donors, INGOs, large NGOs based in Colombo and individuals connected to the peace process. The pilot phase of Info-Share, which began in September 2003, will lead to a two year programme to build an information and knowledge sharing network in Sri Lanka, to sustain and infuse the peace process with lateral idea sharing and information exchange.
