Hivos wants to contribute to a sustainable and fair world by increasing opportunities for people in developing countries and giving them greater scope to develop themselves. Local NGOs play a key role in this. They support groups of citizens who defend their own interests and who fight for human rights and democratisation, thus helping to shape an active and resilient society.

Hivos (Humanist Institute for Development Co-operation) is an organisation working to further emancipation and democracy and to combat poverty in developing countries.
Hivos provides financial and political support to over eight hundred local private organisations in more than thirty countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and South-Eastern Europe. The activities of these organisations centre around the five Hivos policy themes: economy and credit facilities, culture and the arts, women and development, sustainable development, human rights and AIDS. Hivos works to fight poverty, to make society a more equitable place to live, and lobbies to influence policy in favour of these objectives.
