Since 1976, Facing History and Ourselves has offered in-depth professional development services; curricular resources; and ongoing support to educators and students in the areas of history, social studies, and language arts. We are dedicated to helping teachers around the world lead their students in a critical examination of history, with particular focus on genocide and mass violence.
Facing History’s work is based on the premise that we need to—and can—teach civic responsibility, tolerance, and social action to young people, as a way of fostering moral adulthood. If we do not educate students for dignity and equity, then we have failed both them and ourselves.
Our newest interactive website, "Be the Change: Upstanders for Human Rights," (http://www.facinghistory.org/BeTheChange) was developed specifically for thirteen to eighteen-year-olds. Created with the help of student interviewers, the site profiles the stories, influences and motivations of five Reebok Human Rights Award winners.

How it works: in school
Facing History and Ourselves offers a model of professional development for educators that encompasses in-depth training, individualized follow-up support, and classroom resources. Facing History delivers this program to a national network of educators through our seven regional offices; major current initiatives in Colorado, Florida, Idaho, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina; and to hundreds of additional educators throughout Europe, Africa and Asia.
How it works: in the community
Facing History also reaches out to the larger community including students, parents, police officers, community activists, civic and religious leaders and other citizens. Activities include book clubs, workshops, symposia and conferences that are open to the general public. Research and development of new curricular materials, new and enhanced technology and numerous community initiatives enrich the core program and keep it current.
