EWB-UIUC, as a student-led and student-operated chapter of EWB-USA, is a chapter which focuses on two aspects: international development, and environmental sustainability.
International Development:
We currently have three projects developing water infrastructure and distribution systems in various communities in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Guatemala.
These communites are:
-Adu Achi, Enugu State, Nigeria
-Socorro, Guatemala
-Ntisaw, Cameroon
In addition, we are in the process of obtaining a new project in Ghana, for the development of stored solar cookstoves. We also have a project that aims to develop a solar-powered refrigerator for a business in Haiti.
Environmental Sustainability:
EWB-UIUC currently leads a successful biodiesel initiative to transform waste vegetable oil from university cafeterias into biodiesel for university vehicles. An emissions sensing project seeks to build a portable device which can collect data on various toxic pollutants and greenhouse gases from stoves in developing countries. We are currently constructing a local wind turbine for educating the public about sustainable energy.
