The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation is based in Cape Town, South Africa and is run in association with the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre at the University of Cape Town's Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine. The Foundation operates community sites in greater Cape Town's Nyanga and Masiphumelele districts.
Fusing a unique combination of academic expertise and social activism, the Foundation is involved in a number of initiatives including:
* the provision of antiretroviral therapy
* operating a free mobile HIV testing unit
* studies into adherence strategies, adherence monitoring, and HIV's interaction with tuberculosis
* the training and guidance of health care professionals
* preparing communities for HIV vaccine clinical trials
* providing adolescent HIV prevention and improving women’s health.
All of the Foundation's activities are underpinned by research and evaluation. We aim to impact policy and practice both nationally and internationally through relevant research, peer reviewed publications, and feedback to government, civil society, and the community at large.
DTHF is driven by a passion for humanity and a vision of South Africa without AIDS. Over the years, it has become a source of advice for medical practitioners, support for people seeking testing or treatment, and leadership in preventative education. With an experienced and dedicated team of over 150 doctors, nurses, researchers, and community-trained field workers, the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation offers a holistic approach to the HIV epidemic.

Future Fighters
Arming the youth in our communities with knowledge, esteem, and hope in the battle against HIV.
Since their inception in 2004, DTHF's Adolescent Community Advisory Board, the Future Fighters, have given voice to the youth in our communities. Initially launched as a platform for preparing Nyanga and Masiphumelele districts for adolescent vaccine trials, the Future Fighters have developed into educators and advocates in their communities, and leaders in HIV prevention.
Through drama, poetry, song and dance performances, this charismatic group of young volunteers encourages their peers to know their status, to learn as much as they can about the disease, and to participate in DTHF's studies. These youth are nominated to the Future Fighters for their speaking abilities and education skills, and represent leadership and hope for a better future for all.
In particular, the Future Fighters have been chosen to represent young people's opinions regarding the important work we do in Nyanga and Masi. Their feedback to researchers on youth behavior and attitudes has proven invaluable and helps to form the best methods and practice for implementing further studies. In addition to their advocacy on behalf of their peers, they also serve as role models in their communities. Over the years, they have enthusiastically entertained public and private crowds about staying healthy, and have planned and implemented other community awareness events such as World AIDS Day and World AIDS Vaccine Day.
