Communications Rights in the Information Society (CRIS) is a campaign to ensure that communication rights are central to the information society and to the upcoming World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). The campaign is sponsored and supported by the Platform for Communication Rights , a group of NGOs involved in media and communication projects around the world.
It is our view that some very serious issues arise for civil society and NGOs in the context of the emerging Information Society, and its governance globally, for instance regarding a right to communicate, impact on cultural development, equitable access to services and information, balanced global development, media ownership and content, and so forth.We believe that civil society must play a central role in planning the WSIS from the earliest stages, and not simply during the event itself. Furthermore, we also believe that the best way to ensure that civil society is well represented is to coordinate and cooperate together.
