CEE's primary objective is to improve public awareness and understanding of the environment with a view to promoting the conservation and sustainable use of nature and natural resources, leading to a better environment and a better quality of life. To this end, CEE develops innovative programmes and educational material, and builds capacity in the field of education for sustainable development (ESD). To test the validity and effectiveness of its programmes and material, CEE undertakes demonstration projects in education, communication and development that endorse attitudes, strategies and technologies which are environmentally sustainable.

"Education for Youth" is one of the 21 thrust areas of CEE.
In recognition of the need to extend environmental education to youth who are on the threshold of becoming active participants in society as citizens, decision makers and leaders, CEE has developed programmes aimed at reaching out to them and tapping their volunteer energy. Resource persons from CEE also directly interact with youth through lectures, seminars, workshops, projects etc.
The ‘Youth for Environment' (YEN) Groups at CEE was formed in 1994 to make youth aware of environmental realities and promote their involvement in improving the environment, through formal and non-formal programmes.
CEE Hosts the Secretariat for the South Asia Youth Environment Network (SAYEN).
SAYEN (www.sayen.org) was set up in July 2002. Supported by the UNEP Regional Office, Asia and the Pacific; SAYEN is linked to TUNZA, UNEP’s strategy for engaging young people in environmental activities and in the work of UNEP. SAYEN focuses on involving youth for ‘Sustainable Development (SD) in South Asia’. SAYEN has membership from the SAARC countries—Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. An organization in each of the member country has been identified as the National Focal Point (NFP) for the network. Centre for Environment Education (CEE) India hosts the Secretariat of the network. The number of SAYEN members in each country ranges from 20 to 100 with over 1500 youth organizations, individual, national and international agencies including Government in the region associated with SAYEN. NFPs facilitate SAYEN activities in their respective countries.
