BirdLife Malta was formed in 1962 (then known as the Malta Ornithological Society) as Malta's first environmental organisation. It is a not for profit non-governmental organisation that works for the protection of wild birds and their habitats. With its current membership of 3,000 paying members it is the largest environmental NGO in Malta. It relies solely on membership fees, donations and grants or sponsors for its activities and projects. BirdLife Malta is the national partner of BirdLife International, a global federation of 66 bird protection organisations with 105 country programmes and 2.15 million members worldwide. BirdLife Malta (BLM) works concurrently on several fronts for bird protection through conservation, education and bird study.
