Biophysics is that branch of knowledge that applies the principles of physics and chemistry and the methods of mathematical analysis and computer modeling to understand how biological systems work.
The society consists of 14 committees that address the implementation of the society's stated purpose to encourage development and dissemination of knowledge in biophysics. Committee members and chairs in all but two of the society's fourteen committees serve three-year terms, renewable once. All new and continuing committee appointments are approved by council when it meets each year at the Annual Meeting. Committees include membership, awards and education.

The Biophysical Society hosts an annual meeting for scientists to gather and discuss their latest research findings. This forum is also important for budding young scientists (e.g. graduate students) to meet each other, present their work and to meet experienced researchers/potential employers in their field. This is one of the best international meetings that a biophysicist can attend.
The Biophysical Society publishes the Biophysical Journal, which is a respected publication and has an impact factor of about 5.

The Biophysical Society Annual Meeting allows young researchers to present their research through poster or oral presentations. Students can enter into the main category or the specialised student categories that usually involve prizes. Students wishing to attend the meeting can also apply for scholarships that will help travel, accommodation and registration costs. See our website for more details.
Young scientists are also encouraged to publish in the Biophysical Journal. Of course, their work undergoes the same rigorous process as that of their more experienced counterparts, but this should be a credit to their publication!
