Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights.
We are building a world in which every person enjoys the rights included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards. Towards this end:
* Amnesty International takes action to stop grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination. We campaign, for example, to free prisoners of conscience, ensure fair trials for political prisoners, protect refugees, abolish the death penalty, end political killings, “disappearances” and torture, and bring to justice those responsible for human rights violations. * Amnesty International seeks to expose human rights abuses accurately and quickly. We independently and impartially research and publicize the facts of individual cases and patterns of human rights abuses.
* Our members, supporters and staff then mobilize persistent public pressure on governments, armed political groups, companies and others to prevent and stop these violations.
* Amnesty International promotes public awareness and understanding of the full range of human rights, and we work with a global community of organizations to ensure broad support and respect for all human rights.
* Amnesty International is governed by its members. We are independent of all governments, political persuasions and religious creeds. We are funded by our members and donors, and no funds are sought or accepted from governments.

> Investigate the facts. Amnesty researchers quickly gather information and assure themselves of the facts. Who is being attacked? What has happened? Who is responsible?
>> Expose the truth. Amnesty makes the facts public through published reports, the media, publicity actions and the Internet.
>> Mobilize Amnesty supporters and the public to speak out until the violations stop.
>> Create pressure for change. Amnesty takes “strategic” action to bring about change. Who can influence the situation? What actions will stop the violations?
>> Prevent violations from taking place. Protect human rights defenders. Stop impunity. Call for global action when societies are in crisis. Build global institutions and standards to protect human rights.
>>Promote respect for everyone's human rights. Encourage personal responsibility. Support youth activists. Organize community and global awareness campaigns. Support human rights education.

Opportunities for Youth
mnesty International encourages and supports youth activism through the Youth & Student Program. Young people are a diverse crowd, and not everyone's a student, so we've tried to offer membership options that accommodate different ways of working.

Individual Activists
You may wish to take action as an individual. This could involve writing letters, gathering signatures on petitions, writing articles, giving presentations or otherwise taking action on your own. As an individual activist, you are basically a full single member of Amnesty International Canada (English Speaking), but you get extra support and materials from our excellent youth and student co-ordinator.

Clubs and Groups
A more popular option is to participate in the program through a Youth and Student group in your community or at your school. You can sign up as an Amnesty or Multi-Issue club and take action together for human rights.
Why Not Do Both?
Just because you're in a group doesn't mean you can't be an individual member of Amnesty! (Or vice-versa) If you've got questions or aren't sure which one is right for you, read through the information on this web site to get a better idea of the program, or contact us for advice.
