Aksyon Kabataan traces its roots to the ROCO for President Youth Movement (RPYM) founded in November 1996 by its founding President, Darwin Mariano and a group of student leaders wanting to support then Sen. Raul S. Roco in the latter’s presidential bid in the May 1998 elections.
All over the nation, an overwhelming wave of support for RSR from the youth was already building. Having heard or read about Roco in his various media visits or features, thousands of youth volunteers signed up to share their time, talents and treasures into helping out RPYM. The number of youth supporters reached as many as 35,000 all over the country.
Youth volunteers transcending beyond demographic lines and of varying passions and persuasions spent sleepless nights and took on the summer’s sweltering heat just to stick campaign posters, distribute pamphlets and what-have-you just to get their message across: the spirit of meritocracy should prevail- it is high time we place righteous and brilliant spirits into the bureaucracy!!!
Such support was at best attested by RSR’s good showing in the polls despite of the lack of financial and political machineries. Such overwhelming turn-out inspired the youth all the more.
Though the youth felt betrayed and disappointed by the evils of vote-buying and what with the elections still falling prey to guns, goons and gold, the youth of RPYM felt that the challenge to revolutionize the Filipino people’s concept of elections vis-à-vis good governance is indeed colossal and forms part of a continuous campaign. Such challenge requires much dedication and commitment that the youth of RPYM felt the need to organize themselves into one national and cohesive organization in order to meet the said challenge head-on.
Thus, after the elections, the youth asked RSR’s clearance to organize themselves into an organization. Thus, with RSR’s blessings, Aksyon Kabataan was officially organized. Wanting to keep the flame of critical-mindedness and social awareness alive in the youth, AK came up with the 1st Pulso ng Kabataan Debate Series from November to December 1998. The said debate enjoined more than 15 schools and universities all over NCR.
The youth also felt the need to interact with their counterparts in other provinces and cities who also extracted pounds of flesh and blood during the campaign. Thus, on May 10-14, AK held its 1st National Leaders Conference at Bagiuo City enjoining around 200 youth leaders all over the country.
After the resolutions and with a clearer organizational structure that sprung from the said Conference, the youth deepened their resolve to sustain the campaign for change. The said Conference was followed by a second one on October 26-29 here in Cebu City.
AK also involved itself in mass mobilizations especially during the Anti-Erap campaigns. It has hosted various symposia and for a all over the nation (?). AK NCR participates every now and then in GMA-7’s Debate program to manifest the organization’s stand in various issues. AK Cebu also became one of the organizer-sponsor for V-Day Cebu – a global campaign to end violence against women.
In the 2001 elections, AK also helped in the campaign for PPC, particularly Aksyon’s senatoriables, Mareng Winnie and Joker Arroyo. The organization was delighted to have Joker in the Senate but the loss of Mareng Winnie and of Aksyon in the party-list was proof that there are still several strides that need to be taken particularly in strengthening the organization’s base and in keeping people informed about the party.
Admittedly, most of the student-members of AK have transcended into the workplace and the organization is now faced with an “ageing population”. Thus, the need to infuse young and “virgin” blood into the organization is one of the urgent concerns of the organization.
We need young people with a vision and a dream for this nation. We are looking for hopefuls and not for hopeless. It is after all said that the change this nation badly needs will not come from the hopeless – it will come from the hopeful.
