ATPS is a multi-disciplinary network of researchers, policy makers, the private sector and civil society interested in generating, promoting, and strengthening innovative policies on issues of science and technology in Africa. ATPS is unique in that it operates through chapters in 29 countries across Africa. Furthermore, the ATPS reach is not limited to member countries. ATPS’ main strength lies in its ability not only to generate knowledge, but to broker knowledge across the continent and the rest of the world. The vision of ATPS is to become the international leading centre of excellence and reference in science, technology and innovation (STI) systems research, capacity building, communication and sensitization, knowledge brokerage, policy advocacy and outreach in Africa.

ATPS improves the quality of STI systems research and policy making in Africa by strengthening capacity for science and technology knowledge generation, communication and dissemination, use and mastery for sustainable development in Africa.
Emphasis is placed on knowledge sharing at various levels through: (1)Joint research, training activities and deliberative workshops between African researchers, relevant government institutions and responsible authorities as well as international researchers/institutions and (2) Stakeholder and public participation events to share existing and new knowledge amongst researchers, government agencies and the public to encourage ownership of technology policies that result from the research and participatory exercises.

The African Youth Forum on Science and Technology (AYFST) was initiated by ATPS in 2005 in collaboration with the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), the Netherlands. Since then the AYFST has provided a useful platform for African young professionals to build capacity in science, technology and innovation policy research, policy dialogue and policy practice. Under the auspices of the AYFST, ATPS has launched the Youth Innovation Challenge Programme (Y I CAN) which is designed to build a culture of innovation amongst young people in Africa by facilitating targeted linkages with the quadruple helix (Researchers, Private Sector, Civil Society and Policy Makers.
