ACOT Uganda is an indigenous organization operating in northern Uganda generally and Gulu District specifically. ACOT is a legally registered organization No. CDR/453.
Since January 2006, ACOT has worked in critical areas of social-economic transformation. These include the following:
a) Psycho-social support
b) Mitigating the effects of HIV/AIDS
c) Designing income generating activities for the disadvantaged segments of the community.
d) Scholarship fund
e) Promotion of practical agricultural innovations
f) Working to improve the human rights environment
g) Capacity building
Psycho-social support
ACOT firmly believes that in order to reintegrate the members of the community who have been traumatized by the two decade insurgency in the region, it is imperative that services relating to psycho-social support be offered. Through promoting guidance and counseling and related activities.
Mitigating the effects of HIV/AIDS
It is often argued that insurgency is a catalyst for the spread of HIV/AIDS. ACOT appreciates the existence of modes of prevention of HIV/AIDS and also places emphasis on care and support for the affected and infected. This includes orphans and widows.
Designing Income Generating Activities
It is worth noting that offering psycho-social support may not be in itself sufficient. It is imperative that some form of economic support be offered to the members of the community who have been guided and counseled. Through activities such as Bee-Keeping, Basic Detergent Production (Liquid and Tablets-Bars) among others.
Scholarship
The war has adversely affected the economic base of the communities rendering them unable to provide basic fee for the children and youth. ACOT is fully cognizant of this critical state of affairs and is working towards improving the standards of education through seeking support for needy but able children and youth in the region.
Promotion of practical agriculture innovation
Northern Uganda generally boasts of fertile land. Agriculture has been for long the mainstay of rural economies. The insurgency destroyed all the progress that had been achieved. ACOT emphasizes the adoption of improved agricultural practices. These include; proper spacing, application of fertilizer and agri-business.
Working to improve the human rights environment
The insurgency has led to breaches of human rights in different quarters. ACOT is working together with partners in the field of promoting human rights in the region, through mobilization and sensitization of concerned stakeholders. This is through workshops and seminars.
Capacity building
ACOT appreciates the fact that capacity building is continuous process this is why ACOT attends and seeks to attend workshops and training in different areas relating to its mandate. Some of the training has been organized by key NGOs in Uganda.
