The Africa Canada Accountability Coalition (ACAC) believes that because of a systemic lack of awareness and education about African-Canadian issues in Canada, Canadians have not held their leadership publicly accountable for the relationship between Canada and the continent of Africa. As a result, in Canada, the status quo is to be passively tolerant of human suffering in Africa and ignorant of our unfulfilled responsibilities to this region, despite considerable political and economic interests
ACAC firmly believes in the power of individuals and democracy. Through education, individuals are able to choose to break free from the status quo. Democracy ensures that the Canadian leadership is held accountable to its citizens. Each individual who chooses to express his or her view to the local Member of Parliament directly impacts the Canadian leaderships actions. Thus individuals in the Canadian democracy can ensure that their leadership fulfils their responsibilities to Africa on behalf of all Canadians.
Our focus since inception has been the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the site of fresh outbreaks of violence in October 2008. We are calling for Canadian humanitarian aid in the area, support of the UN mission, MONUC, and a reexamination of the laws that Canadian mining companies must follow when operating abroad.
