ACDAS was founded in January 1991 and incorporated as a nonprofit organization in the same year. We aim to increase public awareness of African-Canadian arts in the community at large by offering quality, diversified entertainment.
We are a Black theatre group open to anyone interested in the African-Canadian heritage. We intend this site to be a little about what we do and also as an information source about Canadian contemporary issues and history as explored by ACDAS (Mary Ann Shadd, Harriet Tubman, Black immigration to British Columbia in 1860, the No. 2 Construction Battalion, the works of Canadian, African and Caribbean writers are a few) and as a link to other Canadian performers and sites.
The success of the African-Canadian Dramatic Arts Society's efforts depends on the commitment of its volunteer members and community support. For eight years, ACDAS has mounted its Annual Fall Splendour Variety Concert. For Black History Month 1996 and 1997, ACDAS presented Black Visions, an evening of dramatic expression.
ACDAS members, past and present, come from Canada, Jamaica, Malawi, Nigeria, Trinidad, Guyana, Cameroon and Ghana. Members include adults, children and teens. ACDAS reflects the diversity of its members in its material. We are not Caribbean or African-oriented. Instead we embrace those backgrounds as part of being Canadian and recognising that we are Canadian.
