"Model United Nations" (MUN) is a genuine simulation of the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, and other multilateral institutions, which catapult students into the world of diplomacy and negotiation. During MUN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors of UN member states, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe to debate current issues on the organization's vast agenda.
The students or "delegates" in MUN, prepare draft resolutions, engage in strategic planning, negotiate with advocates and adversaries, engage in conflict resolution, and navigate the UN's rules of protocol. The objective of these processes is the mobilization of "international cooperation" in order to resolve problems that affect almost every country on earth.
Prior to playing out their ambassadorial roles in MUN, students conduct research on the particular global problems to be addressed. The problems are drawn from today's current affairs.
MUN delegates also closely revise the needs, aspirations and foreign policy of the country they will "represent" at the event.
This interactive learning experience not only involves young people in the study and discussion of global issues but also encourages the development of skills that will be useful throughout their lives:
research
public speaking
consensus building
commitment and cooperation
writing
problem solving
decision taking
conflict resolution
