Montessori Kindergarden is a private kindergarden owned by a Montessori Foundation, although gets financial support from the city of Helsinki. The pedagogical ideas of Maria Montessori are decisive in the educational methods used, as in Montessori schools worldwide. In the Kindergarden there are two different groups, 23 children and 3 leaders in each one. These children come to play in two shifts, either in the morning or in the afternoon. There is a little group of 5 children, which stays for the whole day. Physically the Kindergarden is a large place, with gym hall and outdoor garden. The children also use the cultural center and library of the suburb weekly. The idea to have the European volunteer in the Kindergarden serves intercultural communication. The skills to handle situations with people, who are from another culture and speak another language, are very important in the society nowadays. The sooner young children get used to the idea that cultures mix and get together, the better are their abilities to grow up to be tolerant human beings. It is also important to the staff to make their working community more international. The volunteer himself gets to know a new culture, society, language and pedagogical methods deep within 12 months. The work with children also speeds up the learning of the Finnish language. Montessori Kindergarden cooperates with eight other hosting projects, which all have applied to be EVS- projects and cooperate with the exchange programme of the National Committee of ICYE Finland. These hosting projects receive training and tutoring by the National Structure of EVS (CIMO) as well as from ICYE Finland. Financially Kindergarden provides food and the pocket money given to the volunteer monthly, 800 FIM. The project will be evaluated after 6 months in an evaluation course organized by ICYE as well as at the end, after 12 months. These courses are for a group of young international people spending one year in Finland as volunteers. Several personal and group work methods will be used in order to describe the personal experience of the volunteer year. The volunteer and the host project also fill in evaluation forms for ICYE. The project and the volunteer himself will take part in the EVS mid-year evaluation organized by the National Structure (CIMO).
