The Czech Environmental Partnership foundation (Nadace Partnerstvi) is a member of the Environmental Partnership for Central Europe, a consortium of foundations in th Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania that for the past decade have worked to foster and promote community-based environmental action in Central Europe while fostering cooperation between individuals, organizations, and across sectors. The core activity of the foundation is providing small grants of up to 8,000 USD (average 1,800 USD) to a wide range of community-based environmental initiatives. The Environmental Partnership is currently the largest (in fact, virtually the only) private source of funding for environmental projects of nonprofit organizations and communities in the Czech lands (2000 grants budget = ca. 15 million CZK, is 400,000 USD). In contrast to many other foundations, the Environmental Partnership takes an active approach to its grantmaking, remaining closely involved in the projects it supports. This enables the foundation not only to target support more effectively, but also provide additional forms of assistance where needed. In addition to small grants, the Environmental Partnership also provides technical and networking assistance as well as special training and fellowships. A growing part of the foundation's activities are a number of special programs, including Greenways/Zelene stezky (promoting sustainable tourism, regional development and protection of natural and cultural heritage); Partnership for Public Spaces (revitalization of communities by involving local residents in improving public spaces), Transportation for the 21st Century (promotion of sustainable approaches to transportation), Landscape Stewardship (development of land trusts and other public/private approaches to landscape management), Rural Sustainability (promoting sustainable development in 3 "model" rural areas), and Right to Know (promoting public access to information and decisionmaking regarding the environment). The foundation is also involved in a number of regional/international initiatives, including the Carpathians Ecoregion Initiative. The Czech Environmental Partnership foundation has close contacts with a broad range of organizations, communities, and institutions, both within the Czech lands as well as in Central Europe, the European Union, and North America.
