Young Left was founded on September 5, 2001 in Toronto at a meeting that brought together several youth activists from around the city with the aim of beginning a left-wing youth movement across Canada, to challenge the increasing poverty, environmental degradation, state violence, gross social and economic injustices and corporate strangle-hold on our society. Inspired by the new movement against corporate power, Imperialism and capitalism that has exploded onto the world scene in Seattle and Quebec City as well as by the ideas and examples of great revolutionary women & men, past and present from all nations such as Che Guevara, Angela Davis, Ho Chi Minh and Norman Bethune, Young Left fights for a better future for the youth and the people. Young Left is an organization of progressive, internationalist and democratic youth with revolutionary idealism and the determination to unite and mobilize the youth of Canada and their diverse talents, abilities and creativity in the radical transformation of our society outlined in our 12 point program. Membership in Young Left is open to all youth in Canada between the ages of 14-30 regardless of color, culture, gender, religion, language or sexuality, who want to unite in the aims of the YL program. In the common struggle for youth rights and peace, as members of the World Federation of Democratic Youth, Young Left stands shoulder to shoulder with the people and youth all across the world.
