Heal The Rift is a non-profit, non-political organization started by college students from the Muslim and Western worlds to promote dialogue and understanding between the two cultures. Our main objective is to begin changing the perspectives and misconceptions that the Muslim World and the West have for one-another and which stand in the way of peace and reconciliation. We want to give moderate voices a platform for mass expression and counter-balance the disproportionate amount of negative images of both cultures in the public consciousness. Our summer event, "HTR 2008" will increase the visibility of the moderate message on both sides, marginalizing the message of radicals, and increasing cooperation across cultures.

In order to take the first step towards intercultural understanding, Heal the Rift intends to generate a solidarity movement between moderate forces from both worlds, which will be expressed in a large-scale event this summer in New York City, called "Heal the Rift 2008". The event will take place on July 19th in Washington Square Park, and it will feature high-profile speakers, musical performers, and Olympic athletes from both worlds. By capturing national, if not global, media attention, HTR 2008 will counter-balance the disproportionate amount of negative images of both sides in the public consciousness. Our goal is to alleviate the hysteria and suspicion that has been fed to the people of the world and definitively prove that the "Clash of Civilizations" is pure illusion. People will finally be able to identify a tangible alternative to fringe elements that have regrettably come to characterize our two civilizations.

HTR 2008 is not geared towards policy change, nor is it a political protest -- it is simply an opportunity to celebrate solidarity between two cultures that share the same basic values.

Our organization has many opportunities for youth involvement. As an organization conceived and led by students, we value the capability, creativity, and dedication of youth. Yet Heal The Rift also hopes to engage people of all ages and backgrounds. We invite anyone and everyone to get involved with our organization and our “Heal The Rift 2008” summer event. Volunteers are encouraged to help in the weeks leading up to the July 19th event and/or on the day of the event. Also, one of the most crucial roles youth can play in our organization is that of spreading the word for our event. The more people attend, the better!
