World Literacy of Canada's overseas program works in Northern India, Nepal and Sri Lanka to improve the lives of impoverished people through literacy, education and community development. Through our skilled and sensitive India staff we implement projects directly in the Varanasi area, and also support several projects run in cooperation with local partner organizations in other areas of India, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
Here at home, World Literacy’s main objective is to increase Canadian public awareness on the importance of literacy and international development issues, and to generate public and political support for initiatives to change North-South relations. Our development education programs serve to educate Canadians about the global illiteracy problem and to share the lessons of the Canadian literacy movement and the NGO community. Our goal is to show that there is hope for progress when development programs are directed towards meeting people's basic needs.
WLC also oversees a number of school and community-based projects aimed at improving reading, writing, and oral language skills, and encouraging family literacy, community engagement and awareness.
