The Hong Kong Award for Young People, formerly known as The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, is a worldwide organization for young people. In 1988, "The International Award For Young People " was adopted as the general term to describe the Award Programme worldwide. In 1994, the Global Bird became the newmark. Thus, following this international trend, the Award in Hong Kong started to change its current name and logo to "The Hong Kong Award For Young People" and , Global Bird respectively with effect from April 1, 1997.
The Award, in its new name, will still uphold its serious principles to cultivate young people with a "balanced development" and a spirit of "self-challenge". Moreover, to encourage more young people to make good use of their leisure time to strive for their success, the Award Scheme will try to strengthen relationship with other youth organizations.
The Hong Kong Award For Young People is a member of International Award Association which promotes a balanced programme for the all round development of our young people all over the world. Today, over 60 member countries with 400,000 participants are running the Award under a number of different titles.
With reference to the globe, the Global Bird , embodies the universal values, international applicability and a sense of belonging to the world community of the Award. Its personal values, self-improvement, excellence, confidence and pride, are symbolized by the bird flying upwards.

The Award Scheme is a programme universally designed to meet the needs and interests of all young people. It embraces a very wide range of adventurous, cultural and practical activities which young people may choose to participate voluntarily in their own time, under the guidance of adult volunteers. To gain an Award, the participants have to fulfil the requirements of the different sections of activities, namely Service, Expeditions, Skills and Physical Recreation. (Gold Award participants have to take an additional Residential Project.)
The Scheme encourages young people to go out and experience the world around them, to provide service to others, to train physical strength, to have a spirit of adventure and discovery, to develop personal interests and social skills.
Through a graduate series of experience in the diversified activities offered, young people will learn the value and importance of self-discipline, independence and perseverance. They will also become maturer with a sense of responsibility which will help them throughout their lives - at home, at work and as a useful member of the community.
