Our vision is to become a regional living laboratory that inspires, informs and involves youth and their educational mentors to engage in learning about and applying sustainable development principles and practices locally and globally in their daily lives. In addition, the Mediterranean Center for Sustainable Development Programs will become a focal point for schools and communities that brings youths together and motivates them to increase their awareness of the root causes and impacts of global warming and climate change, and builds their capacities to take action.

MCSDP develops and implements experiential programs for school age youths that extends their school-based curriculum in the areas of sustainable development, environment, character education and democracy and human rights. Programs are held at Kan Yama Kan village, our near zero-waste residential facility located on 120 acres of reclaimed desert land in rural Upper Egypt.
When we engage a school into our program, we become active partners with the teachers and educators in designing 2-7 day residential programs. We take a holistic approach to learning. Students learn about the environment through age-appropriate hands-on activities designed to provoke critical thinking and follow-up discussion/action in the classroom. They are exposed to sustainable development concepts and practices that are simple, easy to comprehend and applicable. Many students leave with an action plan in hand for reducing waste or conserving resources at home and at school when they leave our site.
Our programming is proactive and flexible. We recognize that youth today face social and global challenges in a fast-paced world and we believe, as the older generation and educators it is our responsibility to prepare today's youth for leadership tomorrow. We enable them to gain the intellectual and life skills they need to succeed. We do this by exposing students to practical learning experiences and modeling the behavior and values we teach; we use issues that arise while living in a “community” as learning opportunities about respect for others, good governance, human rights, and personal and collective responsibility.
We introduce youth to the concepts of sustainable futures and the Millennium Development Goals; and insist on their right to know the realities they will face and the lifestyle choices they can make as a result of global warming and climate change. We focus on small actions youth can take in their homes, schools and local communities to prevent and minimize these impacts through knowledge transfer and simulations.

Older youth who have completed leadership training with MCSDP may be invited to serve as counselors during our summer sessions; youth also serve as interns and maintain our Facebook group account. Youth who have participated in our programs contribute to our programming efforts by sharing with us, exercises and activities they have researched or created.
In addition, as a result of participating in our "camps" many youth have the opportunity for the first time to:
- have a positive exposure and appreciation for nature and the desert;
- live in community and rely on themselves;
- form environmental or green clubs at school;
- care for and feed animals;
- plant trees and work in a garden;
connect with others without technology (PlayStation)
- build interpersonal skills and capabilities to work in a team.
